We, the Orashi National Congress (ONC) and Southern Youths Foundation of Nigeria (SYF), condemn in the strongest terms the reported killing of about 33 illegal mining suspects in Niger State.
While we do not support illegal mining and its devastating effects on our environment, economy and security, we firmly believe that *every suspect remains innocent until proven guilty* and is entitled to due process under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Extra-judicial killing is unacceptable, unlawful and a violation of fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.
We therefore call on:
1. The Federal Government and Niger State Government to order an immediate, transparent investigation into the incident.
2. Security agencies to adopt lawful, professional and rights-respecting approaches in tackling illegal mining.
3. The National Human Rights Commission to intervene.
Illegal mining must be tackled through Regulation, empowerment and prosecution, not jungle justice.
We commiserate with the families affected and urge restraint.
