Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche, has called on traditional rulers in Ekpeye Kingdom in Ahoada East and Ahoada West Local Government Areas of Rivers State to stay away from partisan politics.

Nwuche, who is Chairman of the South-South Development Commission, made the call on Saturday during activities marking his 65th birthday at his country home in Ochiba.

He said traditional rulers should maintain a fatherly role to all their subjects irrespective of political affiliations, warning that involvement in partisan politics could cause disaffection and erode the dignity of the traditional institution.

According to him, it is inappropriate for royal fathers to participate in political rallies and other partisan activities.

"It is inappropriate for a royal father to play partisan politics. The role of a leader of such category is to be a father to all, irrespective of party affinities," Nwuche said.

"Look at how our kings behave; some of our kings will go to a rally, wear regalia, and dance as politicians. I was instrumental in the emergence of some of those kings, and I am advising them to stay away from politics. A king must have honour and dignity. I advise them to change their ways."

The former lawmaker also advocated for an amnesty programme for repentant cultists in Ekpeye land to improve security in the area.

He said he had engaged youths involved in cultism and criminality to embrace peace, noting that farming, the main occupation of the people, thrives only in a peaceful environment.

"I've told our boys who are carrying guns that they must stop it. I'm advocating now that they should be given amnesty, so we can have peace. Our people are farmers; they desire peace to farm," he said.

Nwuche expressed optimism that the amnesty programme would be introduced before the end of the year, adding that he does not want to see young people from the area killed.

He further urged residents of Ekpeye Kingdom to unite for the development of the area and called on them to support President Bola Tinubu and candidates of the APC and the Renewed Hope Coalition in the 2027 general elections.

He thanked widows and Christian faithful who attended the prayer session organized as part of his birthday celebration and pledged continued support for widows, orphans and other vulnerable groups.

Activities marking the anniversary also included a visit to the Adventist Rehabilitation, Welfare and Orphanage Home in Edeoha, Upata Kingdom, and a novelty football match in Ahoada town.
