Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, has called on the Federal Government to grant amnesty to repentant youths and former gang members in Ekpeye Kingdom and the Orashi region of Rivers State.
Nwuche, who is the Chairman of the South-South Development Commission, made the call at an event in Ekpeye Kingdom. He was represented at the event by Kingdom Ajugo.
According to him, an amnesty programme would facilitate the reintegration of repentant ex-gang members into society, amid persistent insecurity in communities across Ahoada and Ekpeye Kingdom.
Nwuche disclosed that the former gang members had written several letters to traditional rulers, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the National Security Adviser, requesting amnesty, but are yet to receive a response.
He added that the group had also tendered an apology over their alleged involvement in the killing of the Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada, SP Bako Angbashim, by a gang member identified as 2Baba.
